From Evan Caffrey
Attorney for Southeast Texas War Memorial & Heritage Foundation
(USS Orleck )
Following is a quick update on the USS ORLECK. As you
know, the Foundation tried very hard to relocate the ship to
North
Little Rock's Inland Maritime Museum. It spent approximately
$100,000
to remove the screws and sonar dome to reduce draft so the ship
could
transit the Arkansas River. We then tried very hard to get a
price to
tow the ship to North Little Rock. It took months to even get
anybody
to give us a price, and when we finally got one, we were short
by at
least $100,000. Therefore, our efforts to relocate to North
Little Rock
were not successful, despite our best efforts.
Right about the time it became clear that North Little Rock
would not work, the City of Lake Charles came around and changed
its
position and voted to approve the use of its lakefront as a home
for the
ship. Now the hurdles that remain are: (1) getting a survey of
the ship
so it can be insured for the trip; (2) arranging berthing in
Lake
Charles (infrastructure); and (3) getting a tow for the ship.
We are
short of funds, and while various promises have been made of a
free
survey and free tow, nothing has materialized as of yet. We
have had
two hurricanes, Gustav and Ike, that have impacted our area and
slowed
down progress. Ike was the worst of the two, and the ship did
sustain
some minor damage which is being repaired.
We will know more in the next few weeks as we recover from
Hurricane Ike. We will continue our efforts to get the ship
surveyed,
insured, and moved to Lake Charles, where real repair,
restoration, and
maintenance can begin, and the ship can be re-opened as a museum
and
reunion site.
Tax deductible contributions to the Southeast Texas War
Memorial
and Heritage Foundation, Inc., are badly needed and will be much
appreciated. Donations can be sent to:
